Beth Robertson Fiddes | Scottish Contemporary Landscape Artist
Beth Robertson Fiddes is a renowned Scottish contemporary landscape artist, celebrated for her expressive paintings inspired by the dramatic scenery of the North West Highlands. Born on the Hebridean island of Tiree and raised in the Scottish Highlands, Beth has developed a distinctive artistic practice rooted in a deep connection with the natural environment. She graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 1995 with a degree in Sculpture and now lives and works in Elphin, Sutherland, where the surrounding mountains, coastline and wild landscapes continue to inspire her work.
Working directly from the landscape, Beth spends much of her time exploring the remote coastlines, mountains and lochs of north-west Scotland. She creates sketches and studies outdoors before developing larger contemporary landscape paintings in her studio. Living in Elphin, Sutherland, places her close to the remote and elemental landscapes that continue to shape her artistic practice, including Assynt, Coigach and the rugged Atlantic coastline. She returns to these places throughout the changing seasons to capture their atmosphere, character and ever-changing moods.
Beth’s Scottish landscape paintings explore the relationship between place, memory and the elemental forces of nature. Bridging the space between realism and abstraction, her work moves beyond traditional landscape painting to focus on the textures, structures and subtle details that define a particular environment.
While her paintings often celebrate the vastness and drama of the Highlands, Beth is equally drawn to the smaller elements that reveal the personality of a landscape. Weathered rocks, sea foam, tidal movements, rock pools and shifting patterns of light and water become subjects in their own right, allowing her to explore the rhythms, textures and fleeting moments found within the natural world..
A defining feature of Beth’s work is her exceptional ability to capture the movement, transparency and energy of water. Over more than two decades as a professional artist, she has developed a unique understanding of how water reflects light, interacts with rock and transforms the landscape. From Atlantic waves crashing against ancient shorelines to the quiet stillness of Highland pools, her paintings convey both the physical presence and emotional atmosphere of water with remarkable sensitivity.
Beth’s contemporary landscape art is deeply connected to the passage of time and the ongoing transformation of the natural world. Ancient geological formations shaped by wind and sea are contrasted with temporary moments of changing weather, shifting light and moving tides. Through her paintings, she explores the balance between permanence and fragility, creating atmospheric works that evoke a powerful sense of place.
Working with oil, acrylic, ink and mixed media, Beth creates richly textured surfaces through a process of layering, collage, erosion and reworking. Paint is repeatedly applied, removed, sanded back and rebuilt, mirroring the natural processes that shape Scotland’s coastline over centuries. This combination of experimentation and close observation results in immersive paintings that capture both the physical landscape and the emotional experience of being within it.
Reflecting on her creative process, Beth says:
"I start with an idea of the direction I would like to go in, but it's the mistakes and surprises that drive the painting process. I would never be able to sustain interest in a piece of work if I knew exactly what it would look like in the end. The painting is finished when I'm happy that I've captured the feeling and memory of the initial point of inspiration or place."
Beth Robertson Fiddes has exhibited extensively throughout Scotland, and her work is held in private collections across the UK and internationally. Recognised for her expressive interpretation of the Scottish landscape and her extraordinary ability to capture the movement and atmosphere of water, she has established herself as one of Scotland’s leading contemporary landscape artists. Her original Scottish landscape paintings continue to inspire collectors who are drawn to the beauty, drama and timeless character of the Scottish wilderness.
