Chris Bushe RSW

Chris Bushe RSW (b.1958) is an acclaimed Scottish landscape and seascape artist based in Edinburgh. Renowned for his expressive oil paintings, Chris captures the ever-changing light, atmosphere and elemental beauty of Scotland's west coast, particularly the Hebridean islands of Islay, Iona and Mull. While he has long drawn inspiration from the landscapes of Aberdeenshire and the Mediterranean, it is the rugged coastline and remote islands of the Scottish Hebrides that remain at the heart of his artistic practice.

Born in Perthshire and raised in Tornaveen, Aberdeenshire, Chris studied Archaeology and Ancient History at the University of Edinburgh before completing a BA (Hons) in Fine Art at Gray's School of Art, Aberdeen, in 1984. Following graduation, he worked with town planners and landscape architects while continuing to paint, before becoming a full-time professional artist in 1996. In 1999 he was elected a member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour (RSW), recognising his contribution to contemporary Scottish art.

For over three decades, Chris has explored Scotland's remote coastal landscapes through painting. Drawn to places where land, sea and sky meet in dramatic and ever-changing conditions, he is fascinated by environments shaped by weather, geology and time. His paintings evoke the solitude and power of the Scottish islands, capturing moments when shifting cloud, Atlantic light and changing tides transform the landscape. While rooted in direct observation, his work seeks to convey not only the appearance of a place but also its atmosphere, emotion and enduring presence.

Regular visits to the Hebrides have provided a continual source of inspiration. Whether depicting the turquoise waters of Iona, the dramatic shores of Islay or the rugged coastlines of Mull, Chris creates paintings that communicate both the physical landscape and the emotional experience of being immersed within it. His fascination with late afternoon and evening light is evident throughout his work, as illuminated skies and reflective seas create compositions filled with drama, movement and quiet contemplation.

Chris begins each painting on location, producing sketches, watercolours and photographic studies to record the unique qualities of light, weather and place. Back in the studio, these observations become richly layered paintings built through successive applications of paint. Working with brushes, palette knives and a variety of unconventional tools, he creates expressive surfaces that reflect the movement of wind across water, the texture of ancient rock formations and the energy of the Scottish coastline. The tactile qualities of paint are central to his practice, allowing him to build depth, luminosity and a strong sense of physical presence.

Highly regarded by collectors of Scottish contemporary art, his atmospheric oil paintings are celebrated for their expressive handling of paint, exceptional use of light and powerful interpretation of Scotland's coastal landscape.
