Georgina McMaster

Georgina McMaster is a Scottish contemporary wildlife artist renowned for her highly detailed and expressive oil paintings of animals and birds. Working predominantly in oil, she creates distinctive wildlife portraits that capture not only the physical beauty of her subjects, but also their individual character, presence and spirit.

Born in Scotland, Georgina studied at Edinburgh College of Art, graduating in 2002 with a BA (Hons) in Visual Communication, specialising in Drawing and Painting. She subsequently completed her teacher training at Bath Spa University in 2004 before developing her career as a professional artist.

A lifelong fascination with animals lies at the heart of Georgina’s practice. Initially inspired by Scottish wildlife, her work has evolved through years of close observation, sketching and photography. She is particularly interested in the individuality of each animal she paints, from the intelligence and expression found in the eyes to the texture and softness of fur and feathers. Her meticulous approach is balanced by expressive brushwork, bringing a sense of life and immediacy to her subjects.

When painting her compositions, Georgina frequently places her subjects against minimal or unarticulated backgrounds, allowing the animal to command the viewer’s full attention. In other works, subtle suggestions of landscape, foliage and habitat provide a sense of place without detracting from the central focus. This balance between precise observation and painterly restraint has become a defining feature of her contemporary wildlife paintings.

Travel and first-hand observation are central to Georgina’s work, with research trips to the Masai Mara in Kenya, Finland and the Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve in India providing lasting inspiration. Closer to home, she draws inspiration from Scotland’s countryside and wildlife, from Highland cattle and deer to the birds, butterflies and bees that visit her own garden.

Through her paintings, Georgina invites the viewer to pause and look more closely, creating a sense of connection that encourages a deeper appreciation of wildlife and our relationship with the natural world.
