Jonathan Shearer is a contemporary Scottish landscape artist
renowned for his expressive oil paintings of the Scottish Highlands and its
wild, untamed landscapes. Working en plein air in some of Scotland’s
most remote locations, he captures the raw energy and elemental power of these
dramatic environments through bold, gestural brushwork and richly textured
paint.
Raised in London before moving to the Scottish Highlands at
the age of eleven, Jonathan developed a deep and lasting connection with the
landscape from an early age. He studied at Gray’s School of Art, followed by
postgraduate study in Cyprus, before returning to Scotland to pursue his career
as a full-time artist.
Jonathan’s painting practice is rooted in direct experience
of the landscape. From exposed mountain summits to rugged Atlantic coastlines,
he works outdoors in all conditions, seeking to capture fleeting moments and
the exhilaration of being immersed in nature. Working quickly, he creates small
oil studies that preserve the spontaneity and immediacy of his surroundings.
These studies form the foundation for larger studio paintings, retaining the
energy and emotional intensity of the original experience.
Central to Jonathan’s work is a fascination with paint
itself – its texture, physicality and expressive possibilities. Constantly
experimenting with his materials and techniques, he embraces the unpredictable
nature of the creative process, allowing each painting to evolve and take on a
life of its own. His richly layered surfaces and instinctive mark-making
reflect a desire to create paintings that feel raw and elemental rather than
polished or meticulously resolved.
More than simply depicting the Scottish landscape, Jonathan
seeks to convey the sensation of being immersed within it - the wind against
your face, the softness of the moor beneath your feet and the clouds enveloping
a mountain. Through his expressive and physical engagement with paint, he
captures the sheer exhilaration of wild places, inviting the viewer to
experience his deep connection with the landscape.
