Francis Boag is a celebrated contemporary Scottish painter whose expressive paintings explore landscape, memory and place through bold colour and dynamic composition. Often regarded as one of the leading painters working in the tradition of the Scottish Colourists, his work is recognised for its richly layered surfaces and atmospheric interpretations of the Scottish landscape.
Born in Dundee in 1948, Francis studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in the late 1960s, where he was taught by influential artists Alberto Morrocco and David McClure. Their emphasis on colour and painterly freedom would have a lasting influence on his work.
Following graduation, Francis enjoyed a successful career in art education, teaching across Scotland before becoming Head of Art at Aberdeen Grammar School. Throughout this time he continued to paint, refining the distinctive style for which he is now widely recognised. In 2001, following growing demand for his paintings and a period of postgraduate study at Gray's School of Art, he left teaching to become a full-time professional artist.
Drawing inspiration from the landscapes of Aberdeenshire and Stonehaven, as well as his travels further afield, Francis paints coastal harbours, rolling countryside, cityscapes and still life. Working intuitively, each composition evolves naturally, allowing colour, texture and atmosphere to emerge through the painting process. Working primarily in acrylic and mixed media, he builds his paintings through layers of paint and collage, creating richly textured surfaces that enhance their depth and luminosity.
Today, Francis Boag is recognised as one of Scotland's leading contemporary painters, admired for his confident use of colour and his ability to capture the atmosphere and character of a place with warmth and sensitivity.
