Peter Foyle – Contemporary Scottish Landscape and Still Life Painter

Originally from Dorset, Peter Foyle discovered his passion for art at a young age. As a teenager, he would cycle through scenic country lanes, easel and paints in tow, seeking out subjects to capture en plein air. Even before finishing school, Peter had won awards for his artwork and sold several paintings and commissions, showcasing early recognition of his talent.

Peter studied at St. Martin's School of Art in London, graduating in 1986 as a finalist in the prestigious Readers Digest Young Illustrators Award. He worked as a freelance artist and illustrator until 1990, when he and his wife settled in Ayrshire, where Peter continues to live and create.

Peter’s artistic practice is defined by his fascination with light and atmosphere. His oil paintings on Belgian linen cover a diverse range of subjects, from sunlit Italian piazzas and Venetian waterways to the rural landscapes and bustling cityscapes of Scotland, including Glasgow and Edinburgh. He also enjoys creating still life compositions in his studio, exploring the interplay of light and reflection on everyday objects.

This versatile and dynamic approach has earned Peter numerous awards, including the Royal College of Surgeons and Physicians Award at the Royal Glasgow Institute. He describes his method as “drawings in paint,” aiming to convey the impression of a scene rather than a detailed representation.

"I am inspired by the way light and reflections can transform ordinary objects and familiar places, giving them a renewed beauty."

Peter Foyle’s work is held in private and corporate collections and is regularly exhibited throughout the UK.
